Position : Ship's Doctor

Job Description (Abridged) :

  • Provide high standards of both in-patient and out-patient medical care on a daily basis
  • Undertake on-call duties in addition to routine office hours
  • Comply with the Company's Health, Safety and Environmental Policies
  • Represent the Company in a positive manner

Working Conditions :

  • Medical teams vary in size between one doctor and two nursing officers, to two doctors and four nurses. New-to-sea doctors are always posted on two doctor ships, where overall responsibility of the medical centre lies with the ship's Senior Doctor.
  • The ships' Medical Centres consist of: doctors' consulting rooms, treatment rooms, in-patient beds; including at least one critical care ward; x-ray room, emergency room, laboratory and dispensary.
  • In-patient: oxygen delivery (from cylinders and concentrators), cardiac monitoring systems, infusion pumps, syringe drivers and ventillators.
  • Emergency use: defibrillators both manual and AED's, and external pacemakers.
  • Patient transfer: wheelchairs, stretchers, spinal boards and immobilization devices.
  • Diagnostic: ECG machines, spirometry & PEFR, teleradiology, ultrasound (on some ships), Sonicaid (for fetal Doppler monitoring), and a wide range of laboratory investigations including blood glucose, FBC, electrolytes, Liver Function Tests, cardiac markers including quantitative Troponin I, CK-MB, D-dimer, and BNP measurements, ESR, INR, urinalysis, urinary Beta-HCG, influenza A&B, streptococcus A, legionella, malaria, gram stain, hepatitis B, HIV, Norovirus, drug screen and salivary or breath alcohol measurements.
  • Dispensary: stocked with a comprehensive range of medications including thrombolytics (Tenecteplase).
  • Supplies: a wide range of supplies for minor and major injury and wound management are available, such as suture materials, dressings, both plaster and fibreglass casts for fracture immobilization, slings, splints and an autoclave machine to sterilize surgical instruments.

Requirements :

  • Broad post graduate experience and proven efficiency in emergency medicine including the management of acute cardiac and medical emergencies, major and minor trauma, intubation and airway management, general practice or other experience in the management of minor medical conditions.
  • Current medical registration approved by the Company in accordance with vessel Flag State requirements.
  • Possession of a valid accredited ALS/ACLS certificate prior to joining a ship.
  • Company approved medical certificate.
  • Eligible for issue of a United States C1/D Visa.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, practice autonomously, team member.
  • Strong management skills.
  • Commitment to complete at least 2 four month contracts.

  • Tours of duty are of approximately four months duration followed by a 4-8 week vacation resulting in approximately 240 days work per year.
