Doctor Spencer Cheung, originally from Huddersfield, UK, trained at Newcastle Medical School and qualified in 1995. Since then he has had a diverse and exciting career in emergency medicine working all over the UK and internationally in over ten countries.

His qualifications include MBBS, MRCS Ed (A&E), Diploma in Remote Health (polar option), and Diploma in Immediate Medical Care (Dip IMC RCS Ed) which allows doctors to treat people out of hospital.

As part of his travels, Doctor Cheung has developed a specialism in expedition medicine. He has assumed the role of main doctor for groups of travellers on a number of remote expeditions, including three months living and working in the Belize jungle, South of Mexico. His work has included pre-hospital medicine for international organisations and charities such as TrekForce, Discover Adventure, MacMillian Cancer Relief, The Children's Society and Mencap. Doctor Cheung has carried out his medical duties whilst trekking across the Sahara Desert and the volcanic highlands of Iceland, cycling across Mexico twice and the High Atlas Mountains, and pony trekking over the Canadian Rockies.

In 1999 Doctor Cheung began work with the British Antarctic Survey and spent one year as ship's doctor onboard the oceanographic research and logistics vessel, RRS James Clark Ross. He then travelled to Australia in 2001 to experience the different medicine practised over there.

Before joining P&O Princess Cruises in 2005, Doctor Cheung conducted some research with the Hampshire Ambulance Service in the UK to improve the quality of care provided by operators on emergency 999 calls.
